Post Trauma Pain

Persistent pain after a traumatic injury is not uncommon. Often, post-trauma pain treatment begins just after the accident that caused the injury. Treatment depends on where the pain is originating.

Whiplash (neck pain)

Whiplash is an injury to the soft tissues and joints of the neck from a sudden jerking or “whipping” of the head. This type of motion strains the muscles and ligaments of the neck beyond their normal range of motion

When a vehicle stops suddenly in a crash or is hit from behind, the seat belt will keep a person’s body from being thrown forward. But the head may snap forward, then backward, causing a whiplash injury.

In addition to car accidents, whiplash may be caused by roller coasters and other amusement park rides, or sports injuries.

Most whiplash symptoms develop within 24 hours of the injury and may include:

• Neck pain and stiffness

• Headaches, most commonly at the base of the skull

• Dizziness

• Blurred vision

• Fatigue
